Your Guide to Eclipses in Astrology

Edited by Gemma

What Is An Eclipse?

Thee are two types of eclipses, both solar eclipses and lunar eclipses. Solar eclipses happen at the time of a New Moon whereas Lunar eclipses happen at the time of the Full Moon. The eclipses are special types of Full or New Moons, because they are so much better aligned than their regular versions. Take for example the New Moon. This happens when there is a conjunction between the Sun and the Moon as seen from our Earth’s perspective, as in the diagram of the solar eclipse above. The Moon will move in front of the Sun so as to block the Sun’s light for the time it is exactly in alignment and you can see it moving on after a couple of minutes. During the Full Moon lunar eclipse, the Sun and Moon will be in opposition, which means they are each at opposite sides of Earth. At this time the Earth will create a shadow as it shields the Moon from the Sun and the Moon is therefore eclipsed.

Why Are Eclipses More Powerful?

Eclipses occur at the time of a New or a Full Moon in the lunar cycle and are essentially a super-powered version of them, astrologically speaking. They are super powered because they always occur closer to the Moon’s Nodal axis (either the North Node or the South Node) and this means the Moon and the Sun are much closer in alignment by declination as well as in right ascension.

Typically, the conjunction or the opposition of the Sun and the Moon to one another means they are aligned this way by right ascension, but this does not always mean they are exact by declination as well. You can think of right ascension as a celestial longitude and declination as a celestial latitude, as it is extrapolated into the celestial sphere. Now, the North Node already represents a hypothetical point at which the Moon will pass through the ecliptic, which is the apparent path of the Sun around the Earth from a geocentric stand-point. This means that the closer to the nodal axis the lunation is, the more powerful the eclipse will be. In fact, whether an eclipse is partial or full depends on how many degrees it is away from the nodal axis on the zodiac wheel.

The Nature of Eclipses in Astrology

Whatever happens at the time of an eclipse, every astrological signature that’s within the Full or New Moon chart in question is heightened in intensity. So, If we take for example the partial lunar eclipse that happened at 27 degrees of Scorpio last Friday, we can see we had an opposition between Mars and Uranus with just an orb of 1°12’ with Mars in Scorpio and Uranus in retrograde in Taurus. This would already be quite an impactful transit aspect, yet because it occurred at the exact same time of the eclipse, this would have been energetically impactful even more-so. It’s not necessarily a smooth or lucky transit. In fact this can be a transit that many accidents happen as people tend to act on impulse or quite suddenly at this time. Having said this, Venus in Capricorn was in a partile trine to Uranus so this may have helped smooth things over enormously.

How Should We Interpret Eclipses?

Eclipses are usually aspecting our own natal chart for a good reason. There may be some shake-ups at the time of the eclipse, but they are happening to get us to stand up and pay attention to something. Usually, a change is required to happen in our lives and the eclipse will help to facilitate that change. Even if we are enjoying our peace and the status quo of our life, the eclipse may feel or seem like a bug-bear at the time, but the changes that come at these times are usually for the best.

At the time of an eclipse, most especially if the eclipse itself or one of the planets in the eclipse chart closely aspects one of your natal planets, you can expect either a release of something that needs to go or for something completely new to come into your life, depending on the type of eclipse that is underway.

The New Moon Solar Eclipse

At a New Moon eclipse, this is a time for new cycles, so we can expect something to come into our at this time. Expect an open clearance to invite new energies, people and situations into your life with potential new themes that will eventually give way to more important occurrences, as the lunar cycle moves onwards. If the eclipse aspects one of your personal planets, this will happen for you. You can look to the house the eclipse is falling into in your natal chart to see which area of life you will receive new blessings, opportunities or challenges.

The Full Moon Lunar Eclipse

The Full Moon lunar eclipses are a time for the releasing of cosmic energies, so you can expect that this will be a time that something is released from your life. It may be that it’s a time for letting go for you, as you find that some things in your life are no longer needed or serving you for your highest purpose. You can look to the house the eclipse is falling into in your natal chart to see which area of life you will release what has no longer been working for you.
