An Overview of Available Techniques in Predictive Astrology

Edited by Gemma

Predictive astrology is an exciting subject to learn, once you’re ready to take that leap. If you’ve been teaching yourself to read natal charts for a while and are feeling confident enough to move forwards in your learning journey, you might be excited with the prospect of being able to predict the future astrological weather or envision astrological themes in the lives of yourself and those around you before they unfold.

Here I have listed four popular methods of prediction from the perspective of an astrologer, what they are, how they are used and the what they’re useful for predicting. Read further to find out more.

Transits and Planetary Cycles

Transits are a very popular method of astrological prediction today. You can look at the current planetary positions with astrology software and you’ll see a picture of where in the zodiac each planet currently is, its direction and its degrees on the zodiac. They are also listed on some websites, such as Astrology Online at the following link https://www.astrologyonline.eu/Graphic/Form_Input/Input_Data_Transit_Chart.asp
Here you’ll see a table of the planet glyphs on the right hand side, with their position details right next to it. For example, Pluto is at 24°18’ Capricorn right now.

The planets, the Sun and the Moon all circle through the zodiac at different speeds, moving through their planetary cycles as they go. Transits become very useful when we look at where they are in relation to our natal chart’s planets and points. If your Midheaven, Ascendant or any of your planets are at 24° of any cardinal sign (Aries, Capricorn, Cancer or Libra), Pluto will be aspecting this planet or point of yours right now by way of a hard aspect and there is no doubt you will be currently going through some major life changes. This is your Pluto transit.

Transits are great for looking at themes in our lives, cycles and events that may be likely to happen in the transit’s given time frame. Themes can be psychological, health, career, relationships or home life. They’re always useful as we can often delineate the types of events that are most likely to take place.

Secondary Progressions

Secondary progressions are a popular tool for many astrologers. A secondary progressed chart is often calculated by use of some good astrology software and in this, each and every planet and point within the natal chart is moved forwards by what is known as ‘a day for a year’. This means that for every year you have lived since your birthday, your natal chart is brought forwards one day. This sounds quite simple, but it is actually more complex than this, because everyone’s natal chart is progressed at a different speed, usually depending on the time of year they were born. Also, its not just the days that are calculated, but the hours and minutes are also taken into account within those days that are ‘a day for a year’.

Secondary progressions are especially useful for looking at the internal, psychological or emotional climate of the native in question. We may be able to see what’s happening in terms of internal focus, emotional difficulty versus harmony and what’s happening in terms of cycles of emotional development and maturity. For this reason, the progressed Moon’s Cycle is often regarded as a very important step in natal chart analysis and predictions, because the Moon is at the core of our cycles of emotional maturity, intuition and development.

Solar Arcs

Solar arcs are a type of progressed chart, but instead of progressing each planet forwards at its own unique speed, each planet is progressed forwards at the same speed. The speed that is used is the speed of the Sun in the ‘day for a year’ method. For this reason, the Sun will always be at the same point as it is in your secondary progressed chart, if they are calculated for the same time, but all the other planets and angles will be different.

Solar arc charts are great for looking at concrete external events as important events in our lives very often coincide with solar arc aspects to our natal charts, most especially those that are the hard angled aspects. They are also great for helping an astrologer when it comes to natal chart rectifications, which I will explain properly in another article.

Solar, Lunar and Venus Returns

I have already written about solar return and what these are and you can find several articles on this on astrologyonline.eu. What I would like to explain today is that there are also lunar and Venus returns to consider. While the solar return will tell us about the main themes coming up for us over the coming year, a lunar return will show us monthly themes surrounding emotions and well-being, as the Moon comes back to its natal place in the zodiac once per month. Venus returns are less often. These are closer to a year as they can be recalculated every 225 days and will show us the coming themes relating to money, love and our social lives.
