Pluto Cycles Throughout History
Edited by Gemma
As Pluto moves through the signs, times change, quite often reflecting the world’s economy and fashion.
Pluto in Leo (1939 to 1957)
Fashion had more flair and dramatics about it, as shoulder pads became much bulkier and square in 1939, after which fashion also developed a masculine and military edge to it. The start of the war in 1939 may have affected this, especially as women were needed to begin working more and they desired to appear stronger and more confident. Also, the economy grew in the USA after
World War 2 so more money was available.
Leo may have been a period of lavishness, spending, pride in monetary gains or financial status and a desire for wealth and luxuries.
Pluto in Virgo (1957 to 1971)
Pluto in Virgo saw a re-organisation of world economy. Virgo is detail-oriented and ready to serve, so Pluto in Virgo saw a boom of growth in government services, especially those relating to health, disability, sickness, work and education.
Better organisation and attention to detail meant that money went a long way and more was freed for greater consumption. The highest economic growth since the war occurred in the 1960s during post-war reconstruction, some of which was due to an increase in international trade and the reclassification of within-country trade to international trade. In particular, shipping containers revolutionized trade in the second half of the century, by making it cheaper to transport goods.
Pluto in Libra (1971 - 1984)
Pluto in Libra, after a deep recession in 1981, saw governments trying to control inflation that came about by rising oil prices. In doing so new policies were created, particularly the disinflatory monetary policy. UK Manufacturing was hit hard. Is it a coincidence how Libran Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher famously helped turn the economy around with her cold and stringent ways as she came to office in 1979? It seems like Pluto in Libra was a delicate economic balancing act!
Pluto in Scorpio (1984 - 1995)
The famous miner’s strike ensued for a whole year between March 1984 and March 1985, in which Margaret Thatcher battled for closure twenty of the UK’s coal mines, as they were no longer needed. The tenacity of both Thatcher and the National Union of Mineworkers very much reflects the Pluto in Scorpio times but still. After this was a major economic boom and unemployment fell in the mid to late 1980’s to the lowest it had been in ten years.
In the late 1980s mini skirts became much more popular than any other length and shoulder pads diminished.
Pluto in Sagittarius (1995 - 2008)
The Pluto in Sagittarius era showed excessive confidence in financial and banking affairs, especially in housing pricing, mortgages and loans. Loans and mortgages were given out increasingly to those who couldn’t always prove they were able to pay back and this created several bubbles within the financial markets, especially in the USA.
Home ownership was encouraged and overvaluation of mortgages based on the theory that housing prices would continue to escalate was encouraged. There were also questionable trading practices of both buyers and sellers. Compensation structures prioritising short-term deal flow over long-term value creation reflected Sagittarian confidence as did lack of ability of insurance companies to back financial commitments they were making.
Pluto in Capricorn (2008 - 2024)
Pluto is now in realistic and grounded sign, Capricorn. The beginning of these times saw the negative results of Pluto in Sagittarius’ economic bubbles come crashing down as all material possessions and finances needed to be accounted for. During Pluto in Capricorn, finances have become much more properly organised and after initial crashes and losses, new structures have proved more stable, resulting in some healing and further (albeit steady) growth of the world's economy.
Many things have collapsed during this period, which is true to the nature of ruling planet Saturn’s identity for restriction. The financial crisis of 2007 and 2008 for example happened during Pluto’s move into Capricorn plus the economic difficulties we have had to face due to the spread of Covid-19 more recently.
Pluto in Aquarius (2024 -to 2043)
After much growth and stabilisation of the economy, Pluto in Aquarius in three years may see many inventive ideas of economical reform come into play. Ideas could be progressive, fresh and radical. For example digital currencies such as Bitcoin and Litecoin could become much more widely accepted and traded as an every-day household asset.
Futuristic creative expression, taboo psychological subjects and bizarre fashion may become more socially. They could involve intricacy, inventiveness, many colours, layers, metallics, technology-driven and futuristic (AI type) styles.
Websites and shops will be ever more inventive and technologically advanced and many more products, especially digital ones, may become free and widely distributed.
