NEPTUNIAN SUB-DOMINANT

Neptune is a planet that is elusive by nature, and therefore it can hardly be confined within defined archetypes: its dimension of transcendence, in the natural/animal sphere, expresses the pet's mental skills, intuition, sensitivity, empathy, restlessness and the kind of participation that the animal of this Typology shows in the relationship (except for challenging aspects in the Natal Chart that can compromise these inclinations/capacities).

Neptune in its archetype of spiritual is shown in the pet with moments of isolation from reality: the Neptunian sometimes struggles to adapt to the repetitive daily routine, above all if it is too hectic. Neptune (symbol of dream-sleep) makes the animal inclined to rest/laziness rather than to rules that are felt as habits that provide security.

The Neptunian subject is fascinating thanks to the physical beauty of its harmonious forms and proportions (often small - in miniature, according to the characteristics of the species/breed), attracting attention and winning others over (beyond reasoning) within relationships.

The Neptunian pet is endowed with marked and innate intuition (sensing something that is about to happen before anyone else, such as the arrival of people/storms because of chemical variations released into the air): whether it is sixth sense or not, the Typology seems to have very strong senses of smell and hearing (quick and prompt insight, immediate cognition), which would scientifically explain such "psychic" abilities.

The Neptunian pet can seize the moods of other beings more deeply than other Typologies, showing sensitivity (it bonds closely with human family members), sometimes suffering from loneliness and abandonment issues (the attachment is dependent and emotional): the genetic sensitivity of some dog breeds (American Pit Bull Terrier, Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Cavalier King, Pug, Mastiff, Golden Retriever, Newfoundland, Labrador, Bulldog, Doberman, Pinscher, Dogue de Bordeaux, Beagle, Staffordshire, to name a few). Neptunian restlessness should not be confused with Mercurian unrest, which is due to curiosity for surrounding stimuli: it consists of a fickle/emotional way of receiving external stimuli, which could also cause behavioural disorders (also due to factors such as distance, health problems and anxiety).

Neptune as an archetype of compassion reveals the predisposition of the Neptunian pet for group participation: "fusion" (empathy) and sharing (in its symbol of ensemble, recalling the image of the amniotic fluid). The Neptunian can act as a well-integrated, collaborative and non-competitive pet (without challenging aspects in the Natal Chart), which supports the theory of Kin Selection (Hamilton) according to which social animals help each other (in hunting, defence, etc.) promoting the survival of blood relatives (and therefore the reproduction of genes that are similar to their own): they gain advantages from social behaviour as a pack, such as a smaller chance of being preyed on and greater vigilance/defence in the group against enemies. The character of the Neptunian members seems to be reflected in the pack of canines as for the predisposition, more than other Typologies, to accept disadvantages (which a social group necessarily involves as a "sacrifice" for the individual: fights for food and mating, risk of contracting diseases, looking after the offspring of others, etc.).

According to Roberto Marchesini's "Dog Pedagogy", the motivation (tendencies to perform certain behaviours instead of others, choosing objects and activities that follow gratifying preferences/interests) in Neptunian dogs is not oriented towards specific preferences: the important thing is that the animal feels emotionally at ease in the action, without impositions, traumas or discomforts; socio-collaborative, communicative and affiliative motivation (being part of a small group) is favoured.

Neptunian animals are different according to the presence of Sagittarius, Aquarius and Pisces values: the former with a more adventurous, extroverted, sociable and curious (although naive) nature; the Aquarians have dynamism, interest in original environments and activities (less chaotic than Sagittarians); Pisces values emphasise the need for peace and isolation, and hardly tolerate confusion and impositions.

Parts of the body to pay attention to: pituitary gland, nervous system, endocrine/immune/lymphatic system, thyroid, adrenal glands (antibodies, white blood cells and infectious diseases).

Meanings associated with Neptune in the animal world: intuition, empathy, sensitivity, dependence, meekness, collective instinct.

The myth: the Roman god Neptune (Poseidon for the Greeks), symbol of the Absolute/Everything, allegorically represents the planet of boundless waters, the emperor of the abyss (associated with catastrophes and the dark forces of Nature). In its power of metamorphosis, it represents the evolution of the species at a soul level (Spirit), universal love, unity and connection with the Infinite.

THE NEPTUNIAN IN RELATIONSHIPS

The Moon, connected to the animal's sense of security and emotional attachment – which is fundamental for the future emotional approach towards its conspecifics and its human family – amplifies on Neptune the sensitivity in the emotional bond, which in the Neptunian pet, even more than in others, is quite delicate (especially in the first two years of life): Neptune makes the processes of separation and emotional differentiation harder; emotions are the unquestioned rulers in relationships, for better or for worse.

Emotional dependence is a Neptunian risk: suffering separation and abandonments or showing an attachment that entraps the pet in a dynamic that makes the needs confused and that is not emotionally healthy. Since an early age, the Typology must be supported in decoding perceptions/stimuli, gradually introduced into environments, protected in the experiences they go through, turning vulnerability into potential for assistance to others. With the Neptunians, communicating correctly is more than ever needed (both verbally and non-verbally), as well as not making them feel lonely, keeping them engaged in play/activities, and getting them accustomed to environments that are full of stimuli, towards which, otherwise, they could develop fear (noises, sounds, atmospheric agents).

In the relationship between humans and Neptunian dogs, there is great inclination to collaborate, since the pet is strongly predisposed to integration and tolerance towards other species. Within the hierarchy of the "family" system, the Neptunian dog tends to easily accept its human "pack leader", by whom it feels protected and whom it asks for protection, since the human guarantees an authoritative and non-authoritarian leadership, which is respectful of the pet’s sensitivity. Punishment is deeply felt by Neptune: signs of unease can be found in the pet's refusal to remain alone without its human owner, continuously looking for them or even attacking them, compensating for the discomfort by destroying objects, yelping, fearing strangers, being passive when punished, scolded and stimulated. Respecting its psycho-physical well-being, the Neptunian animal is inclined for interacting activities through pet therapy, since docility, curiosity and sociability are the most evident and socially useful characteristics of the Typology.

Sociability in the Neptunian pet can be similar to deference and submission (avoiding eye contact, lowering their head and ears, tail between the legs, lying down on their stomach, showing their belly, licking another dog’s muzzle): friendly, not hostile, signals, to promote a climate of cooperation full of play and affection (also considering the Neptunian animal breed), but also of fear/submissiveness if the pet feels emotionally uncomfortable. Aggressive/domineering behaviours (attacking, biting and fighting) are not very typical of the Typology, since the Neptunian dog is docile by nature, except in extreme situations where it has to protect itself/react. If calm, the Neptunian pet shows assertive behaviour (tail held upright, tail wagging with high tail, erect posture, pricked ears, its paw/muzzle placed on the back of a conspecific, nibbling on the other’s muzzle), which are all signs that will express self-confidence, desire to affirm one's presence and the control of the territory, but not necessarily competitiveness.

Turid Rugaas’ calming signals (which are used by dogs to convey pacifying messages and avoid any fight) in Neptunian interactions/gestures often indicate a request for help or to stop stressful situations for the pet of the Typology (since it is sensitive to interactions), to which, however, he may react with extreme defensiveness or exhaustion (looking away, blinking, squinting, turning head or entire body aside, freezing in place, sniffing the ground, stretching, sitting/lying down, licking nose, yawning, lifting one paw, approaching laterally in an arc).

In the feline personality types, the Neptunian cat appears to be inclined to neuroticism (sensitive, insecure, anxious, suspicious/frightened cats when facing threats) and to agreeableness (balanced, affectionate, friendly cats) if the natal chart has harmonious aspects; in case of emotional stability, extraversion (driven by curiosity, with a tendency to get bored without stimuli) and impulsiveness are emphasised; less evident, by nature, the dominance (confident, aggressive cats, which can become domineering towards their conspecifics).

According to the feline typologies created by Lauren Finka, the Neptunian cat tends to be willing to play and look after its conspecifics by showing behaviours of inclusion in the family-group (rubbing, closeness); when its emotional condition is balanced and calm, it coincides with the "human" cat (happy to share home/personal space), with the "hunter" cat (wild and predatory in playful activities) and "inquisitive" cat (interested in sniffing and curious towards all stimuli). By nature, the Neptunian cat appears to be cantankerous (and not inclined to be touched) only in case of threat, fear or discomfort.

The character traits of the Neptunian dog is, more than for other Typologies, the result of the animal's psycho-emotional balance, which, if good, enhances the following qualities in the pet: docility (the animal’s ability to respect authority by accepting and positively responding to commands, which is also the result of a good human-animal relationship), curiosity (ability to show interest in and explore the outside world, a skill that helps in training sessions of detection and defence), alertness (ability to sense danger at a more or less close distance, an innate skill in the Neptunian pet), sociability (ability to integrate into human society and to interact). The psycho-physical state of the Neptunian pet and its level of attention and involvement – which have to be kept alive and controlled to prevent the pet from going through phases of stress or apathy – depend on: temperament (responsiveness to external stimuli in a range from apathetic, to quick, although still aloof), courage (ability to face danger promptly), liveliness (the pet shows interest and stimulation towards the objects that are brought to its attention, keeping good focus and performance), fortitude (physical/psychological ability to put up with unpleasant external stimuli and positive reaction/adaptability to more negative situations, controlling irritability and neurosis) and stamina (ability to endure physical and psychological efforts over time, without showing signs of fatigue); less present in the Typology, but triggered by challenging aspects in the Natal Chart and situations of emotional threat/danger is possessiveness (inclination to defend the "ownership" of an object or person, when fearing its detachment or loss).

All Stanley Coren's dog intelligence types are brilliantly present in the Neptunian (if there is psycho-emotional balance): instinctive (what a dog can do from birth thanks to its "instincts"), adaptive (what a dog learns to do by itself through experience), functional (what the animal learns from humans through training/learning) and spatial intelligence (ability to orient itself).

THE NEPTUNIAN AND THE OTHER PLANETARY DOMINANT TYPES

With the Solar, the relationship is sometimes playful, sometimes boring or hard to understand due to a different kind of energy and character. With the Lunar, an almost symbiotic attachment and all-absorbing emotional involvement. With the Martian the similarity is in the mutability: restlessness (volatile energy) to be channelled into play and activities, otherwise, disagreements and irritability may arise. Good connection with the Uranian, where the desire for play, change and movement becomes more chaotic in the Uranian and more emotional in the Neptunian. Interesting understanding with the Mercurian: Mercury's mind is stimulated by Neptunian intuition, triggering curiosity and imagination, in the exploration of new activities and places. With the Saturnian instinct and empathy are mixed with learning skills for lasting results and towards new areas of collaboration. With the Venusian, emotional restlessness tends to increase, and becomes hard to channel. With the Jupiterian, excitement and imagination turn into a desire for exploration, which, however, could sometimes be too careless (dangerous) and chaotic. Nice understanding with the Plutonian, since they both have similar practical, concrete, exploratory energy and initiative, giving life to new learning paths together: an intellectual, but also an emotional connection.
