SATURNIAN CO-DOMINANT

The Saturnian energy is opposed to the vital values of the Sun: it does not mean that the pet belonging to this typology has a dark or hostile energy, on the contrary, its vitality is expressed through calm, determination and introversion, in the ability to "stay", which can be meant as reliability, presence, endurance and skill.

The Typology embodies the archetype of adulthood, maturity (the wise one, meant as the oldest, most authoritative and expert subject of the pack).

The body structure of the Saturnian animal shows considerable height, in accordance with the species/breed it belongs to, and a strong skeletal system, unless there are challenging aspects in the natal chart.

The Saturnian pet is an attentive observer, looks watchful but not threatening, and is more reserved and less outgoing: Saturn in its archetype of introversion expresses the pet's ability not to react impulsively to external stimuli, but to "control" reactions (aggressiveness is, on the other hand, the most common response to all forms of fear).

The Saturnian pet moves in a calm, but not submissive, way; its nature is active/positive, and it tends to be dynamic if driven by some motivation (interests) rather than relationships, with self-confidence that is typical of the behaviour of social dominance (assertiveness), for example in dogs: tail held upright, tail wagging with high tail, erect posture, pricked ears, its paw/muzzle placed on the back of a conspecific, nibbling on the other’s muzzle.

Their nature and behaviour are not unpredictable: the Saturnian’s character (dominance, strength) shows itself with attitudes of caution, apparent coldness (quality of their nature), but actual alertness and receptiveness. They can show a strongly aggressive behaviour when faced with provocations, fears or threats (staring, hair raised, growling, exposed teeth, attacking, biting/fighting). Since the Typology is not very demonstrative on an empathetic/emotional level, the behaviours of deference/ submission in dogs appear less frequent (tail between the legs, lying down on their stomach, showing their belly, all signals-requests to "be kind" to the pet).

The Saturnian Typology is particularly smart, self-controlled and able to manage their reference environment (physical strength and calm actions as a result of their self-confidence): in general, a healthy psycho-emotional development starts from the mother’s presence at an early age (the mother stops playing every time a puppy is overly excited, bites excessively or dominates others); for the Saturnian adult, in particular, the ability to control its emotions when faced with significant emotional stimuli becomes important, unless there are challenging aspects in the natal chart.

According to Roberto Marchesini’s “Dog pedagogy”, the Saturnian dog would be driven by motivation related to: defence of limited territories/environments, protection (Saturn as the responsibility of protecting an affiliate or a puppy), competition (confronting oneself with or competing with a partner), but also collaboration (doing an activity with a partner or a group activity), possessiveness (possession of an object) and affiliation (being part of a small group within which to achieve a position of responsibility).

Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius values give different nuances to the Saturnian pet: Libra makes it less solitary, more friendly (dogs are more inclined to deference/submission) and willing to interact with different species and to open up with interest; Capricorn values, on the contrary, emphasise the inclination to loneliness, hierarchy-dominant status (leadership), coldness/detachment; Aquarius values emphasise flexibility, friendliness, a more tolerant character (extroversion but not dependent attachment).

Parts of the body to pay attention to: bones/teeth/joints, skin, gallbladder, spleen.

Meanings associated with Saturn in the animal world: authority, social status, hierarchy, rule, paternity, maturity.

The myth : Saturn (Roman) / Cronos (Greek), father of gods and men, represents the commitment, the prosperity of the golden age, but also the dark side (bloodthirsty Saturn devouring his children, "consuming" everything) symbol of the obstacles of life and of the strength needed to overcome one's limits: when it comes to animals, Saturn represents the laws of nature that regulate survival. According to C. Darwin, the gradual evolution of species is a (Saturnian) struggle for life that just allows the preservation of the strongest subjects that can adapt to the environment, naturally selecting those that are more evolved and excluding the weakest.

THE SATURNIAN IN RELATIONSHIPS

Saturn in its archetype of solitude expresses itself in independent, skilful, self-confident subjects that are less inclined to show themselves dependent and eager for contact. Cats as a species follow this trend, since they live in small groups (colonies) and stay independent and able to look after themselves without hierarchical roles: their independence is functional to their survival connected to the reference territory. The Saturnian Typology is definitely not antisocial, but its sociality is selected, lowkey, and not necessary at all costs.

The need for hierarchy is very much felt and taken into account by Saturn, as well as being respected by others. In species with defined and hierarchical social structures (dogs and rabbits, for example), the Saturnian pet is favoured thanks to its command and leadership skills (Saturn as a symbol of social status): they are good at taking on responsibility, exercising autonomy, managing to hold high positions in particular group contexts (for dogs, leadership is situational: it depends on the resources that each dog considers as a priority for itself, such as food, mating, decision-making, owner's affection and domestic environment). Saturn in its archetype of performance associates the nature of the animal with the temperament and the ability to handle situations (tenth house).

In the relationship between a human being and a Saturnian dog, rules are fundamental, even more than for other typologies, in order to build relationships between different species based on collaboration, reciprocity and specific roles/groups dynamics with the different members. Thanks to order and clarity in the hierarchy and in the "family" system, the dog belonging to the Saturnian Typology respects the human as its pack leader, who must more than ever be authoritative and not authoritarian (punishments and challenges are for Saturn a battleground that awakens a power struggle).

Although they are sensitive to the lack of affection, among the Saturnian dogs there are subjects capable of waiting patiently (showing less than others their emotional discomfort by barking/yelping or pouring it on environments and objects). The dog breeds that show the Saturnian nature are shepherd dogs (which are natural loners, used to watching over the flocks alone) and those that manage to stay at home alone less anxiously than others, controlling the need to go out and move around (Chihuahua, French Bulldog, Greyhound, Shar Pei, Basset Hound, Shih Tzu, Maltese, just to name a few).

Saturn is critical with respect to the Moon archetype – which is connected to the animal's sense of emotional security, the emotional imprinting that puts the puppy at ease at the early stages of its life cycle and subsequently in the foster family with its caregivers – and can make the pet insecure/ avoidant in relationships (Moon/Saturn aspects and/or challenging aspects in the natal chart), and inclined to respond with indifference, rigidity, detachment or hyperactivity as defence mechanisms (Saturn is associated with fear, insecurity, anxiety, that is the pet’s sense of inadequacy).

In the feline psychological types, the Saturnian cats are inclined to dominance (confident cats, which can become domineering towards their conspecifics in case of threat or territorial invasion) and agreeableness (character key of balanced, affectionate, friendly and gentle cats, also the result of general balance in the natal chart), while less frequently we have Saturnian cats suffering from neuroticism (sensitive, insecure, anxious, suspicious or frightened - evident if the natal chart presents challenging aspects), or impulsive and extroverted cats (which are driven by curiosity and tend to get bored quickly without stimuli).

According to the feline typologies by Lauren Finka, the Saturnian cat emphasises more ancestral (and less "domestic") characteristics, and falls under the category of "hunter" cats (wild and with predatory attitudes in playful activities), "inquisitive" cats (interested in sniffing and curious towards all stimuli), and to some degree also of cantankerous cats (not so inclined to be touched but not fearful/bothered). In a balanced natal chart, the Saturnian cat is identified with the typology of "human" cat: happy to share its home/personal space and not troublesome because it has control over its territory.

Saturnian dogs show fortitude (physical/psychological ability to put up with unpleasant external stimuli and positive reaction/adaptability to more negative situations, controlling irritability and neurosis), stamina (ability to endure physical and psychological efforts over time, without showing signs of fatigue), temperament (responsiveness to external stimuli, but not hyperactivity), courage (ability to face dangerous situations with prompt and determined action), possessiveness (inclination to defend the "ownership" of an object or person, suitable for benefit/defence training) and alertness (ability to sense danger at a more or less close distance); consequently, we would have sociability (ability to integrate into human society and to interact) and curiosity (ability to show interest in and explore the outside world, a skill that helps in training sessions of detection and defence). Although focus and performance are maintained, liveliness is less marked in this Typology (interest and stimulation towards the objects that are brought to its attention), and has to be balanced in a healthy way with docility, which becomes a consequence of the psycho-physical well-being of the Saturnian pet (as the ability to respect authority by accepting and positively responding to commands, which is also the result of a good human-animal relationship).

The Saturnian dog successfully reflects all Stanley Coren's dog intelligence types: instinctive (what a dog can do from birth thanks to its "instincts"), adaptive (what a dog learns to do by itself through experience), functional (what the animal learns from humans through training/learning) and spatial intelligence (ability to orient itself in the environment).

THE SATURNIAN AND THE OTHER PLANETARY DOMINANT TYPES

The passionate Solar , if it lacks balance, could stir competitive responses by clashing with the Saturnian coldness and rigidity. The Lunar is too sensitive, empathetic and different when dealing with relationships compared to the Saturnian. The relationship with the Martian is tricky, since to the latter’s impetuous manners the Saturnian appears too cold and controlled, dominated by rigidity/strictness: high level of conflict. Good understanding with the Uranian , since they are both determined and clear-headed, although Uranus has to control its excessive impulsiveness/quickness. The connection with the Mercurian is a nice mix of intuition, rules, logic and successful learning. Harmonious relationship with the Neptunian : instincts and empathy create lasting results and new areas of collaboration in the learning process. The Venusian fascinates the Saturnian, whose rigidity, however, must not be overbearing towards the former’s pleasantness and harmony. The relationship with the Jupiterian , which is enthusiastic, boisterous and outgoing, although pleasant and indulgent, is complicated: balance is needed, first of all in play. The relationship with the Plutonian is intense: both are endowed with remarkable determination, intuition, learning skills, tenacity, long-lasting performances… what’s important is to avoid any conflict.
