MARTIAN CO-DOMINANT

The Martian Dominant is expressed in the impulse that "fires up" the surrounding environment with vital energy: an active, masculine, primordial, instinctive, quick energy, with an extremely intense sense of initiative which is close to combativeness. The archetype of approach is the conqueror (pack leader), but also the "sentinel", which is among dogs the most restless one, ready to run to alert the other members of the group about a behaviour to be implemented as a pack (social facilitation).

Martian pets appear genuine, almost primordial, in their simplicity. Their responsiveness is very direct, to the point of appearing aggressive even when it is not (dominant style): quickness and energy are what makes the response abrupt, which can be interpreted as domineering by the interlocutor. The archetype of strength (if well supported in the animal’s Natal Chart) is also shown in the pet’s physical prowess and strong muscles (an evident trait in the appearance, even though always in accordance with the animal’s breed).

According to Roberto Marchesini's dog pedagogy, in Martian dogs the motivation (tendency to perform behaviours instead of others, to choose objects and activities, gratifying preferences/interests) seems to be focused on movement, running, jumping, exploration, with competitive, sexual, predatory and territorial attitudes (protecting one's place of belonging, or a conspecific) of an affiliative (being part of a small group) and social nature (achieving a position within the group).

The Martian pet can have different character traits depending on the presence of Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn values. The Aries typology underlines the extroverted, bold, genuine and spontaneous impetus, with a hasty and dominant attitude, evident physical strength and marked focus on sexuality, with the risk of having restless, hyper-reactive and rebellious pets (which want to control the situation): training is important to channel energies. Scorpio values underline an introverted dominance, with a rebellious drive that can lead to unpredictable episodes of aggressiveness, where the subject shows smartness and alertness. Capricornian values highlight coldness: the pet can unexpectedly show bursts of aggressiveness or stifle it, with the risk of developing chronic stress and related pathologies.

The planet Mars in the animal Natal Chart represents the will and the ability to assert oneself in life, which coincides with the desire to prevail (the law of the strongest in order to survive), an instinctive factor in animals in general: competition and ambition become aggressiveness (literally "go towards") depending on the sign in which Mars is and the aspects it forms in the Natal Chart, with more or less ease in controlling one's reactions (especially in Fire Dominant pets) and when fear becomes attack (which can be clearly seen in the aggressive stances that tend to increase the size of the animal, biting and fighting with others). Animal species and breed must be always taken into account to understand and control the Martian inclination in the pet.

A more measured Martian predisposition, which shows a strong character but not dominance, is the assertive behaviour in dogs (tail held upright, tail wagging with high tail, erect posture, pricked ears, its paw/muzzle placed on the back of a conspecific to dominate it, nibbling on the other’s muzzle) to express self-confidence, desire to assert its presence and control of the territory, but not necessarily competitiveness.

The Martian pet does not have an aggressive nature (the Martian dogs won’t attack without a reason or to assert their superiority), but has a strong character: violent reactions always result from unresolved problems, insecurity, inexperience in socialisation, lack of learning. Paraverbal communication is essential for managing dominance/aggressiveness in the Martian pet, also between man and pet (body posture, facial expressions, visual messages must be interpreted correctly in order not to trigger the animal). In dogs, the use of "calming signals" is frequent, visual and postural messages that convey the desire for a peaceful interaction in the relationship, polite gestures to avoid being attacked (the dog looking away, blinking, sniffing, sitting and lying down, licking its nose, yawning, are some examples), which in the Martian typology are much more sensitive than in other typologies: always reassuring the Martian pets by talking calmly, petting them with slow movements, training them in order to reinforce the positive result with rewards and never punishing them (but suggesting an alternative, instead) fulfils their predispositions in the best way.

In the Martian cat, aggressiveness must be kept under control: it has an affectionate, docile and peaceful nature, but sudden and unjustified combativeness can be triggered by factors such as fear, play, defence of its territory (threatened by the presence of other felines, animals or people). The Martian cats are alpha in their search for independence, they get rebellious if scolded, accept contact only when they are willing to and refuse to submit to others: they show that they are fed up with prolonged physical contact by moving their tail and ears and may show irritation towards something against which they cannot vent their anger (taking it out on another target). Leaving them alone, avoiding punishments and improving socialisation (with play, stimuli, boxes, isolation rooms, quiet places to withdraw) decreases neuroticism (anxiety and fear), dominance (becoming domineering on conspecifics) and impulsiveness, channelling the Martian energies correctly towards extroversion and agreeableness (typical of lively but balanced, affectionate, friendly cats, which is comparable with a general balance of the aspects in the Natal Chart).

Among the character traits of dogs, if the Martian character is not afflicted in the Natal Chart, rather than possessiveness (the inclination to defend the "ownership" of an object or person), courage, temperament (immediate responsiveness to external stimuli) and alertness (ability to sense the approaching of danger at a distance) are the traits that are emphasised; in the Martian dog, evident traits are liveliness (interest and stimulation towards the objects that are brought to its attention, keeping good focus and performance), sociability (ability to integrate into social contexts), curiosity (ability to show interest in and explore the outside world through the senses, a skill that helps in training sessions of detection and defence); fortitude (physical/psychological ability to put up with unpleasant external stimuli and positive reaction/adaptability to more negative situations, controlling irritability and neurosis) and stamina (ability to endure physical and psychological efforts over time, without showing signs of fatigue) have to be evaluated according to the circumstances (and the Martian strain). Docility is the result of an overall harmony and the pet’s acceptance of commands and respect of the human’s authority as a good "leader".

Parts of the body to pay attention to: head, forehead, skull (wounds, neuralgia, insomnia).

Meanings associated with Mars in the animal world: pack leader, strength, masculine, sexuality (reproduction), fight, territoriality.

The myth: in Greek mythology, the gods Ares and Athena refer to violence and the winning mind in conflict (temperament/arousal in the animal as responsiveness to stimuli and mental involvement); in the Roman myth, Mars is not only the god of war, but also of fertility: the meaning of strength, linked to the ethological sphere, also refers to the protection of the species and its continuity (reproduction) as a synonym of life protection.

THE MARTIAN IN RELATIONSHIPS

In relationships, the Martian typology refers to the concept of dominance, hierarchical status and competitiveness over others (conspecifics and not): the Martian pet shows a clear need to control the surrounding environment, which, in its positive sense, refers to the ability to handle the situation, when the trend works with balance. Some general factors, in dogs for example, determine a predisposition to a high hierarchical status (positions of command in the pack, which are often assumed by older adults, by males rather than females, by subjects of large size, which have a strong inclination to defend the territory, high responsiveness to stimuli and are good at handling situations).

If the Martian aspects are balanced in the Natal Chart, the pet will be well-integrated, collaborative and non-competitive, which would support the theory of Kin Selection (Hamilton), according to which social animals help each other (in hunting, defence, etc.) promoting the survival of blood relatives (and therefore the reproduction of genes that are similar to their own, a typically Martian trait). If the Martian pet is balanced, the leadership is authoritative and not authoritarian-domineering-aggressive - especially for groups that have linear social systems (rabbits) and asymmetrical-situational systems (dogs) – and will be embodied by an altruistic pack leader, a guide chosen for its strength and experience, which does not subjugate the other members, but is unanimously recognised by the most intelligent and skilled subject. The advantages of social behaviour are also significant, such as a smaller chance of being preyed on and greater vigilance/defence in the group against enemies.

In the human family too, the well-balanced Martian typology shows a favourable psycho-physical state: humans must establish rules (which is fundamental in the typology in order not to let the pet take control) and be an authoritative leader in order to allow a harmonious development of the pet through an intense collaborative activity based on pleasure/fun. On the contrary, excessive punishment could make the Martian dog trigger defensive and violent behaviours.

The Martian cat is willing to play and take care of its conspecifics with attitudes of inclusion in the family group, comparable to the "human cat" type (happy to share home and personal space), but also to the "hunter cat" (wild and predatory in playful activities) and “cantankerous cat” (not inclined to be touched), according to Lauren Finka’s feline typologies.

THE MARTIAN AND THE OTHER PLANETARY DOMINANT TYPES

The Martian gets along well with Solar energy, with which an intense emotional connection is possible; difficult relationship with the Lunar, overwhelmed by the Martian’s impetuosity and dominance. With the Uranian, excellent combination of quickness, pragmatism, immediate and instinctive re-action, but these aspects should not be overloaded and the energies must be channelled correctly in order not to trigger aggressiveness. Interesting understanding with the Mercurian, which promotes play and initiatives: both are quick and/or intolerant at times, certainly different in their instinct for dominance, which is typically Martian. Difficult relationship with the Saturnian, which is too cold and controlled for the Martian impetuosity, which can be easily triggered by such rigidity/firmness. Ambivalent relationship with the Neptunian, whose energy is more feminine and often unfamiliar with the Martian’s masculine, disruptive, active, fiery impetus. Day and night, war and peace: the most primordial masculine and feminine in the relationship with the Venusian, which represents the opposite of the Martian. The relationship with the Jupiterian is cheerful in the enthusiasm of fun and action. Grit and intensity with the Plutonian if the energies are well channelled, otherwise, in the event of a fight, there will be a clash of titans.
