Mercury: communication

her: "Hello, how are you?” - He: "I’m still standing”

Sometime ago an acquaintance came to see me together with his friend.
They stayed for a coffee with me and my daughter; we had a chat and then they left.
I am an air sign, with an air ascendant, and I told my daughter, who is a water sign, with a air ascendant :
“Renzo's friend was nice.” and she said: "I don’t like her.” “Why? - I asked – do not you agree with what she said? It seems true and interesting to me.”
“ Yes, yes, but I do not like her anyway, she does not seem sincere to me.”
Irritated and amazed I told her: "But where do you get this idea from? Are you mad? What did the poor thing do?” “Nothing, I don’t know it. Perhaps the way she was looking around …, of sitting …, it is not something I known, it is something that I feel, that’s what it is.”
At the end of the conversation, I had as usual reached the end: however much I had gone ahead with my questions, and digging deeper, I would not have obtained anything more than others: "I feel it … I do not know … that’s how it is …”.
Allow to me now some simple observations: during the meeting with the friend of my acquaintance I was perceiving and assimilating in particular the things that she was saying, her ideas, her thoughts that automatically I was assessing and weighing in their consistency and adherence to reality; the rest, her way of looking, of moving, etc., was the background that hardly would have perceived if I did not have the will to notice it. For my daughter instead, the things went exactly in the opposite way: she first of all perceives and intimately she feels what for me is the background, what for me is the main issue and in evidence for her it becomes the background.
It is easy to understand therefore, why when I speak with her that it seems to me that he is on another planet and so I with a huge effort and a great waste of energy from both we find a temporary agreement point.
Please forgive this short digression in regard to my private life, but it has seemed to me good a method for exemplifying the difficulties of communication that intervene between two persons who have a completely antithetic Mercury in their natal chart. And Mercury, in fact, the winged messenger, is the main culprit of such communicative disasters; he is also the maker nevertheless of the pleasure that we experience whenever it happens to understand someone straight away, when a word is enough and we already know that his thought will unfold clearly and simply and in tune with ours. Mercury has always been a nice guy, fast and brilliant, he immediately perceives the information that interests him, but his interests change according to his position in the natal chart of each one of us. And for this reason what in any relationship is of fundamental importance is that the Mercury of one is in syntony with the Mercury of another, or else there will be the difficulties of communication I talked about.
In general it is possible to state that Mercury in the fire signs gets along well with in the one of the air signs, while Mercury in the earth signs is in syntony with the one in the water signs. To live well Mercury prefers to be in the open air, where he can move with swiftness and to see clearly through the transparency of the air, in the fire signs instead he is easily dimmed by the ardour and by the impatience of realising his aspirations and hopes; in the earth signs he is like Saint Thomas; if he does not see it he does not believe it, and in the water signs it is like water where a slight movement upsets it.

Mercury therefore feels, communicates, exchanges, leads in contact, establishes connections and relationships. It is the planet of the solar system closest to the sun, and also in the natal chart it cannot be far from the sun, in fact it has the task of picking up the right information for the particular sun that it accompanies, to allow on the one hand the growth of the i and on the other hand the unveiling and the pursuit of the mission of that sun. In the personality described by planetary symbolism, Mercury represents the cognitive tool: through 5 senses he picks up the information present in the internal and external environment, then it lists them, selects and puts them into relation to each other, in this way returning the knowledge and the insertion of the I into one’s own environment, in other words the best adaptation for that determinate subject.
Mercury perceives with the senses the stimuli that attract and wake his attention up, because he is curious, fast and attentive, his is a selective attention that in incoming mode already selects and excludes the information that does not interest him.
The merger between what passes between Mercury and 5 senses means that such a planet is particularly a supporter of the practical reality, which it defines and knows by learning and assigning the names of "things", that little by little are used in a network of clear relationships be between them, being in relation to the I. It is fundamental that in the completion of his unequal cognitive function Mercury can distinguish and establish clear limits between all that belongs in the internal, subjective world of the I and all that instead regards the external environment, it must recognise this and to precisely separate the impressions from inside those that are born on the outside, otherwise continuous crossings of the limits and confusion are created between the contents of these two worlds that over time can cause the construction of a false image of external reality. Such confusions and illegitimate interference in fact can lead to simple "projection", therefore they assume other thoughts, sentiments, characteristics that are in fact ours, to become real hallucinations in which our “internal ghosts” are exchanged for external reality.
