We each have all of the eight planets of the solar system in our natal charts and then we have the Sun and the Moon. Often these planets form patterns when there are several aspects between them such as trines, sextiles, squares or oppositions. These patterns are repeatable or distinct amongst millions of charts and it follows that there tends to be particular characteristic traits that come about as a result of them. The Aspect patterns are often named the way they are as a result of how they look once all the planets and points are joined together.
In this article we will have a look at five of the main natal aspect patterns and how they tend to unfold within the natal chart or manifest within the personality of the native in question. This could be useful for you to refer back to if you have any of these patterns in your natal chart if you meet new people that happen to have some of these patterns in theirs.

The Grand Square
The Grand Square occurs when there are four planets or clusters of planets each marking one corner of a square. This means that each one will be in a square aspect with two of the other planets or clusters while in an opposition aspect with the third.
This pattern is a very tense yet balanced configuration in which all planets will usually be in the same modality. Because there's a lot of tension coupled with brilliant balance there’s usually a lot of power and strength with this pattern. The cardinal Grand Square is like a wheel that keeps on turning, the fixed Grand Square is like an immovable, stable structure and the mutable Grand Square is adaptive yet fully secure at the same time.
The T-Square
The T-Square is like a Grand Square minus one corner of the square. This means it's two planets in opposition to one another with a third planet in a square aspect to those two planets. There’s lots of tension with this aspect yet there lacks the balance within that we have with the Grand Square.
The third planet in the T-Square aspect is known as the crux or the focal point of the T-Square and this planet receives so much tension that it can be difficult to manage for the native unless there are other planets or transits to balance it. When the native does learn to manage it through life experience, it can be a source of great strength, personal power and growth, which is the ‘gold’ that can be mined from it.
The Grand Trine
The Grand Trine occurs when 3 planets or clusters of planets form the three corners of an equilateral triangle. Each planet or cluster is 120 degrees from the next such that they each form a trine with the other two. This is usually a very balanced and beneficial configuration.
Grand trine is an easy configuration in which the planets are usually within the same element: Earth, Air, Fire or Water. This usually means that the native has lots of talent, affinity and natural ability when it comes to the element the trine falls into. Because each of the three signs within that element are highlighted in the trine, the native has access to all the capabilities within that element. This can attract plenty of luck and ease into the native’s life.
The Grand Sextile
The grand sextile occurs when six planets are evenly spaced around a natal chart so that they form a hexagon between them. Each planet forms a sextile with each of its two neighbouring planets and the configuration is symmetrical and thought to be perfectly balanced.
Because the Grand Sextile is harmonious and perfectly balanced, there is the potential for a wealth of connecting talents and resources to be used in tandem by the native. The only problem with this pattern is that there lacks a high source of tension, which is usually a great driving force behind growth and movement in the chart. For this reason, once a driving force is employed elsewhere in the chart, harmony and impressive momentum can be seen in life.
The Cradle
The Cradle chart pattern comes about when four planets are connected together by three sextiles while the first and fourth of these planets are in opposition to one another. This is essentially two planets short of a Grand Sextile and has otherwise been known as a trapeze.
Like the Grand Sextile, the Cradle is quite a harmonious pattern, yet there lacks the same level of balance and continuity between the planets. What might result is the spread of energies amongst the planets, as balance is attempted between them, or as the two planets adjacent to the opposition are continually used to balance the opposition. The planets are all either masculine or feminine and the native will need to work hard to master the energies, with ambition and discipline. A masculine Cradle is likely to lend an extroverted leaning to the character of the native while the feminine cradle a more introverted nature.
