The Astrology Behind Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson’s Relationship
Edited by Gemma

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson make one of the most famous couples in Hollywood with a long-lasting, happy marriage. The adorable couple are a Cancerian (Tom) and a Scorpio (Rita) and have celebrated their 33rd year of marriage this year having been wed on the 30th of April 1988.

They met in 1984 as he starred in the ABC sitcom Bosom Buddies and Rita played a part in an episode about a video dating service. Tom told GQ magazine of his meeting with Rita that he felt an immediate spark. He said, "Rita and I just looked at each other and, ‘kaboing’ that was that. I asked Rita if it was the real thing for her, and it just couldn't be denied." They then starred together in a film called Volunteers, a film released in 1985.

When they both met, Tom was still married to his college sweetheart, a Sagittarius named Samantha Lewes, who was also an actress. Although his divorce from her wasn't finalized until 1987, Tom and Rita had taken their romance public by December 1986.

Saturn’s Role in The Longevity of Their Relationship

Saturn is the grandfather of time, stability and maturity and it’s clear this planet is strong in their synastry overlay , with each of their Saturns conjoining the other’s North Node whilst trining their Moons. After all this time, they're still going strong. Tom said of their relationship in 2001, "The success of our relationship was a matter of timing, maturity, and our willingness to have an intimate connection".

Jupiter-Venus and Jupiter-Pluto

We all know that Jupiter is the planet of luck and gifts, squares are a tension aspect and Pluto is the planet of transformation and deep intimacy. Well, Rita already has a Jupiter-Venus natal conjunction in Virgo and this closely squares his Venus in Gemini. This means that, despite their true compatibility, they experience difficulties just like all other couples. Venus square Venus can often mean two people’s styles of both appreciating and showing love and affection aren’t perfectly matched.

They also have a Jupiter-Pluto conjunction between them, with both planets at 00° Virgo. There’s no doubt this would greatly intensify the intimacy in their connection, even to the point of difficulty at times, especially seeing as Jupiter is in detriment here in Virgo and can therefore relate to excess as well as sheer luck in how they seemed to meet in a fated way. "When I married Rita, I thought, This is going to require some change on my part. I won't deny that providence was part of us finding each other, but our relationship isn't magic, in the way it's shown in movies. In real life, our connection is as concrete as me sitting here. Not that marriage doesn't come close to being hell in a handbasket sometimes. But we both know that no matter what, we'll be with each other, and we'll get through it."

In the 1993 Nora Ephron rom-com Sleepless in Seattle Tom and Rita shared the screen again — this time as best friends. The role was a pivotal point in his career and cemented his status as everybody's favourite guy.

Mercury, Moon and the 10th House

With Tom’s Mercury in his 10th house in Cancer, he is comfortable sharing his thoughts and feelings with the world. This is especially true of the way he feels about the value his wife brings to his work, which is a clear indication of her Sun in his 2nd house overlay, trining his Mercury. He was the second actor in history to win back-to-back Oscars and he went on to give the credit for these to his relationship with Rita. What a wonderful man he is! He said, "I view my wife as my lover, and we have a bond that goes beyond words like wife or girlfriend or mother. Without my connection with Rita, I don't know how I would've been able to connect with what Forrest was going through". He explained to Oprah Winfrey on her show that this was the reason he thanked her in his acceptance speech for Forrest Gump.

Tom and Rita have composite Moon in Leo on their Midheaven and Venus in Leo in their 10th house, so it’s equally no surprise their burning feelings for each other are out there for all to know, which Tom Hanks seems very comfortable with.

"I said that I have a woman who teaches me what love is every day," he continued. "Maybe that sentiment is possible to fake, but for me it's really true. What makes me different from others is that I verbalize this stuff. A lot of people would flee from what they think is award-show cheesiness, and I don't. I often joke that my speeches are very personal moments that play themselves out in front of billions of people."

Mercury contact Sun Double Whammy!

With their Mercury making an aspect to the Sun in both directions between them in their overlay, it’s evident they enjoy healthy bonding through communication within their relationship. In 1998, he referred to her as his "best friend," telling Oprah that, “in addition to being my lover, it has been that way from the very beginning. We laugh just as much now at two in the morning as we always have, and we fight less and less."
