What are the Five Most Common Asteroids and What do they Mean?
We know all about the planets in astrology, and what they mean. Our natal charts might look pretty bare without them! Many of us know how we can even interpret these planets in our birth charts. The inner planets especially (the Moon through to Mars) are very personal to us and when interpreted, they mark important significators of our emotional and psychological nuances and character traits. As the inquisitive and orderly beings we are, we have known about and been using the inner planets since the birth of astrology. Furthermore, there have been records of the observations of Mercury since as far back as the 14th century BCE.
Asteroids are not the same as planets, as they tend to be much smaller, while inhabiting the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The five major asteroids in astrology are Ceres, Juno, Vesta, Pallas and Hygiea. They are a relatively newly discovered bunch of celestial objects, with Ceres being the first to be spotted in 1801 by Italian astronomer and mathematician Giuseppe Piazzi.
These asteroids are all named after Roman or Greek goddesses, which gives us a glimpse into their significance and meaning within the natal chart. They are said to bring a much-needed element the divine feminine energies into consideration along with the expression of the nurturing and the intuitive ‘feeling self’. Read on to learn more about what each of these asteroids means, specifically.
Ceres, the Roman Goddess of Cereal and Harvests
Ceres has been classified as a dwarf planet since 2006 because she is huge, comprising 25% of the asteroid belt’s total mass. However, many astrologers still refer to her as an asteroid. She was the Roman goddess of agriculture and grain, while representing the maternal and unconditional love a woman has for her children.
Ceres symbolises all of life’s natural cycles in such a way that the birth, death and renewal process become very significant to her meaning. She gifts us with emerging consciousness and an ability to transform so we can set out on our spiritual path. Ceres is also known as the ‘Great Mother’ and is important in the process of mystical awakening and enlightenment.
Juno, the Roman Goddess of Fairness and Commitment
Juno was the third asteroid to be discovered between Mars and Jupiter and was associated not only with fairness and commitment, but also with love and marriage. The month of June, being the month many people choose to traditionally marry, was named after this Roman goddess.
She is said to be in her element in the star sign of Libra, as she represents balance, fairness and equality within relationships. Where we see Juno in a natal chart this is said to represent our motivations for being in a relationship and some of the characteristics we are drawn to in others. Infidelity and betrayal are also represented by Juno.
Vesta, the Roman Goddess of the Sacred Flame
Vesta is the second most massive body to Ceres within the main asteroid belt, yet she is not quite considered a dwarf planet. She represents purity, sexuality and an unwavering devotion to spiritual causes. Also associated with hearth, home and family, she prepares food for sacred rituals and blesses objects for the same cause.
Vesta was one of ancient Rome’s most important goddesses and was known to represent the eternal fire of divine protection. A number of virgins were employed to keep the sacred fires alight by her temple and around Rome, because if they went out the protection was thought to be lost.
Pallas, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom and Warfare
Pallas is also known as Athena or Pallas Athena was a virgin goddess who was able to channel her intellectual creativity with her femininity such that her head and heart were always in sync and balanced. She was focussed on the detail of her crafts in ways that connected her to the fine arts as well as practical pursuits such as weaving and pottery.
Adorned with a shield and a sword, Pallas depicts a strong feminine energy type also referred to as the alpha female. As she is also able to bridge her intellect and intuition in a unique way, she is considered a wise warrioress. With her mixture of feminine and masculine energy types she represents father daughter relationships in astrology, whether for good or bad.
Hygiea, the Greek Goddess of Health and Cleanliness
Hygiea was one of 5 daughters of Greek God of medicine, Asclepius, who was known for carrying a staff with a serpent wrapped around it. This staff is now featured on the logo on ambulances and of the World Health Organisation. All daughters were Goddesses of health and wellness in some way, yet Hygiea ruled the realm of preventative medicine.
She is also associated with cleanliness and hygiene, two practices that can help towards preventing illnesses and we may link this asteroid with vaccines for the same reason. Hygiea is prominent in many charts of healers and health workers.
