Destiny

Edited by Daniela Grazioli

One “arranger of destiny”, so Simenon calls the Commissary Maigret, his most famous personage. Little, almost imperceptible settlements that Maigret introduces into the life of other personages, which "arrange" or make them explode; in substance they change their destiny. People often meet and face our destiny in novels, films, or news in newspapers: a delay, a lost coach and it changes the life of the protagonists; there is no connection between the personage and the event, apart from what happens to one and the other at the same time and in the same place, which unites them in an indissoluble knot that then becomes, the cause of the subsequent events, in other words there is Jung type "synchronisation", the connection that joins them and makes them share the same destiny.
Little insignificant "settlements", coming from goodness knows where, and they changes a life, our life, which we often do not manage to change in spite of the difficult and hard work of transformation that in the end prove to be temporary superficial improvements that do not even skim the content.
Our meeting with the destiny is often the measure of our precariousness, each thing, without exception, in the life of the man, included life itself, is hung on a thread. Is it written how the thread is unrolled or is it a pure case of chance, in other words that destiny is an unknowable thing, something ordered or the result of unforeseen events? This question is a “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” type and inevitably the answers either in support of the former or latter thesis are always suspended and unsatisfactory.

The difficulty to be solved is in fact that if our destiny is written, mankind has not have any power over his life and becomes a “pathetic”: if instead our destiny can be changed, then life has no sense, it does not aim at anything and the mankind is once again a “pathetic”.
To know that there is a sense, a reason, for the momentary presence of each person in the world, and at the same time to be free to choose one’s own life, are two unstoppable human demands.
To choose one of the two alternatives, in any case involves a loss of something fundamental.
Philosophy, the religions, the physical and biological sciences have given and keep on giving their answers more or less motivated and convincing, but at a theoretical level it is possible to see, at an empirical level, through the experience of daily life that the issues have remained intact and often we feel prey to a senseless destiny or, by choice, powerless personages of an inscrutable plan, of which we only know the distant final reason.

Even traditional astrology has given its answer, and obviously it cannot be of the first type, on the contrary, not only is destiny written, but absolutely defined and everyone can take home a “map” of their own "destiny". This is the current opinion of astrology that, taken more or less seriously, punctually questions the future, or is absolutely refused as seen as the glass ball of the magicians of fables.
There is something in common to all these different answers, which is that be it the hand of God, chance, Nature or the Stars, our destiny is always "outside" of mankind’s reach, it does not belong to us, but to whatever manages it and distributes destinies according to "its" laws.
Instead, we like to think that “destiny is character” and that we are the only and truly responsible people for our "character" and therefore our destiny, which is a form whose shape can be filled with the contents or drawings to be coloured-in with the colours that we choose, is impressed, printed, indelibly carved in each cell of our being from birth, in the same way as the colour of our eyes, but not the expression that we will choose to have. Becoming what we intimately feel we can become and that frees us from the conditionings and illusions of which we are given for us to grow up; this is our true labour and often great pain; it means at the same time realising our intimate and authentic nature and the "destiny" that coincides with it.

Humanistic astrology is a powerful tool in this journey ”within” ourselves the authentic and crystalline origins of our being, towards the promises of being, doing, becoming, that we have brought with us from birth, and along the way we often lose, or it becomes deformed or unknown. As I was saying, humanistic astrology is the path of the white and luminescent pebble of Pollicino that each time helps us return home.
